2011 New Zealand Architecture Awards Winner
City Gallery Wellington
Placed between a 1940 Stripped Classical building and an exuberant contemporary library, the modified City Gallery is the last piece of the puzzle on an important civic site. The extension and now second alteration of the original building is a case-study in the successful adaptation of heritage structure and evidence of a highly-developed understanding of urban space. Budget constraints have proved no barrier to invention, nor to a well-considered reconciliation of new work with existing structure. The liberation of the main axis and the inclusion of a new auditorium and two new gallery spaces have been most dextrously achieved, and on the exterior, the new skin - both curious and recessive - allows the building to present a staunch neutrality to its neighbours. This valued civic amenity now has a new excellence.
