21 Queen Street
A Cinderella-like transformation of an unremarkable but fundamentally sound building into a graceful tower that enhances the cityscape of downtown Auckland. The newly elegant and now taller 21 Queen Street possesses both a clarity of expression and a certain dematerialised levity. Floor plates have been successfully modulated and mullions skilfully articulated; light has been brought into office floors; a generous lobby has been created; and at ground level retail spaces provide an active edge to Queen Elizabeth Square. This project is a timely and standard-setting lesson in adaptive re-use.
