2012 Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards Winner
Whakatane Library Exhibition Centre - Te Kōputu a Te Whanga a Toi
In an act of civic reinvention, the architects have repurposed a large abandoned building and revitalised a neighbourhood. What might have seemed an unpromising prospect has yielded an important cultural destination, combining library, museum and exhibition spaces. A thoughtful reworking of the existing structure has provided a flexible and light-filled environment, and a building well-connected to adjacent open space.
