2013 Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards Winner
University of Waikato: Student Centre
The premise of sustainability as a factor integral to architecture and construction has been thoughtfully considered in this project. The existing building has been reused but opened up and environmentally modulated through the use of transitional spaces and devices such as the protective twisted steel fins of the eastern façade. Natural green technologies as well as photovoltaic panels, solar collections and a roof water collection system have been incorporated in the building’s design. The University is to be congratulated for both commissioning such a progressive building and for its commitment to the on-going monitoring of its ‘life-time’ costings. By its nature as a student centre this building functions as a highly visible statement of the University’s commitment to the effective use of our energy resources.
