Te Kete Ika - Dining Hall Kitchen Re-Development
A significant addition to the Lincoln University campus, Te Kete Ika is a robust singular form referencing industrial-scaled agricultural buildings common to the area. The large sloping roof of the main dining space is supported by a splayed steel structure, simply detailed. The roof appears to float above the walls; a strip of glass neatly detailed behind the struts allows views of adjacent trees and the sky. The combination of high-level glazing and generous overhanging eaves produces a diffused, naturally lit atmosphere throughout the space. In addition to the dining hall, the client’s brief contained relatively complex functional requirements with a large, busy commercial kitchen that not only serves the new dining hall but also provides catering for functions, other parts of the university, and the wider Lincoln community. The design of the new building makes strong reference to the adjacent Landscape Architecture building, designed a few years earlier by Sheppard and Rout, successfully uniting the two buildings in a similar architectural language appropriate to a campus environment.
