Sod the Villa
Tell the villa to sod off? Malcolm Walker has in fact done no such thing in this inspired and inspiring alteration to a rundown Grey Lynn house. Rather he has breathed life into the old belle, highlighted her beauties and revved up the programme with whimsy, craftsmanship and the deft manipulation of volumes into a series of small but highly pleasing spaces. The path of the sun was tracked across the northeastern wall over the course of a year so that a little window could be inserted at precisely the spot at which light would pour in. This almost fanatical attention to such details here coheres into a renovation of supreme confidence and capability.
