2015 Canterbury Architecture Awards Winner
Isaac Theatre Royal
The Grade-A heritage listed Isaac Theatre Royal is the only surviving Edwardian-style theatre in the country. After the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes, the damaged theatre was closed for almost four years. The restoration and rebuild of this theatre has proven itself to be the darling project in the recovery process of the city. The architect’s laudable approach to heritage architecture is both respectful and skillful in its intervention. Many key heritage features of the existing building, including the elaborate façade, marble staircase and the famous 1908 hand painted canvas ceiling dome, have been painstaking restored. Structural strengthening was concealed with precision and the new upper foyer adds a touch of velour. The seating circle was given a new pitch, providing a better viewing angle, while contemporary additions have been designed with clarity and functionality. The heritage value of this project is priceless and its undeniable charming presence in the city will be enjoyed by generations to come.
