2015 Canterbury Architecture Awards Winner
Christchurch Eye Surgery Clinic
This building is the exemplary product of a post-earthquake collaboration between a group of 10 medical professionals – who previously had separate consulting rooms – to build a state-of-the-art medical facility in Merivale. Architecturally, the form of the building is quite different from the surrounding area, predominantly a neighbourhood of older residential villas. Although assertive in form, the clinic engages positively with its setting. The simple, strong building shapes are uniformly clad in vertical, western red cedar weatherboards, which gives the building a natural feel, an effect enhanced by the retention of two large, handsome trees on the Papanui Road boundary. The architectural detailing is simple, crisp and sophisticated, inside and out, and although the building is heavily serviced by mechanical plant, the equipment is neatly concealed in the roof space.
