Mackelvie Street Shopping Precinct
This nicely scaled, well proportioned and appropriately ornamented little retail complex is a charming and beneficial addition to its character neighbourhood. With its simple materials and careful attention to detail, the building admirably performs its immediate function, providing light-filled shops perfectly suited to fashion retailers, and does so much more besides. As well as complementing and referencing its historic environs, the building engages in some context creation of its own. New laneways and a series of small courtyards open up the precinct to pedestrian passage and commercial use, and offer an intimate and urbane retreat from car-dominated Ponsonby Road.
