2025 Western Architecture Awards Winner
Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga
Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga is a striking addition to the Hāwera civic landscape, embodying the spirit of South Taranaki’s black sand beaches and industrial heritage through bold, expressive architectural forms. Prominently positioned on a corner site, the building stands as a beacon for the community. It thoughtfully brings together a library, café, and visitor centre, unified by an interior anchored by a powerful manawa strip that symbolically honours the local iwi. A strong architectural spine supports clear functional planning and spatial distinction. With its integrated sustainability features, Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga sets a new benchmark for future regional developments—demonstrating how architecture can meaningfully honour cultural heritage while championing environmental responsibility.
