HomeGround - Auckland City Mission Te Tāpui Atawhai
The reinhabitation of Auckland’s City Mission is long awaited. Successfully remaking its part of the city, a connecting lane has been inserted at street level, orienting and organising the complex combination of programmatic services and functions. By investing in its users and providing a dignified response to a complex brief, HomeGround transcends institutional building by promoting meaningful social connection at an urban scale. Beyond its social function, the project completes a sensitive heritage restoration of the former Prince of Wales Tavern and provides well-appointed inner-city housing. Innovation in timber construction and prefabrication is evident, displayed in the recessed balconies and distinctive diagonally woven nine-storey public façade.
