The Dart
In an arrestingly bold design responding to a dramatic Mangawhai Heads coastal site, this dart-shaped holiday dwelling maintains a rigorously simple exterior form while harbouring beneath its aerial swiftness a nuanced series of internal spaces. Playing with and against the inevitable symmetry mandated by the central fold, the house favours surprising asymmetries while playfully deferring obvious points of culmination. Despite a sculptural boldness speaking to the surrounding drama of land and sea, an appealingly relaxed holiday home results with carefully framed views to the east and the west. Appearing as a compass in the paddock pointing exactly due north, the house is, less a precarious thing about to take off, than it is a grounded instrument.
