Rangiputa Bach
Poised at the edge of a steep drop down to Rangiputa Bay on the Karikari Peninsula and settled on a critical cut into the back yard of an existing beach house, this bach beautifully mixes holiday routines with the vastness of sky and sea. Despite its striking simplicity—a screened box set above a glazed enclosure—the bach builds in a nuanced range of spatial connections and adjustable elements. With bedrooms and bathrooms above bathed in striated light from timber screens, the glazed living space below plays out varying degrees of reflected sun and ocean light, sea breeze and glazed shelter. Irregular stone pavers set into the ground floor of the house run inside and out, anchoring the dwelling. The mix here of ground, sea and sky borders the spiritual.
