Split House
In this extensive alteration to a traditional Auckland villa, the ‘out back’ extension is unexpectedly shaped by a series of new floor levels sunk down to create an inside ‘topography’, itself responding to the house’s underlying volcanic ground. Mirroring this complexity overhead, varyingly orientated timber panelled ceiling planes express a series of formal operations deforming what started conceptually as a hipped roof. The addition, richly sensuous at one level, is uniquely cerebral at another. Its playful complexity offers a counter to the backyard flow routinely found in these types of additions. The result is a dynamically rewarding interior space, particularly one whose originality challenges more formulaic approaches to the ‘villa-conversion’.
