Town House
Fitted to the rear of paired, Edwardian terrace houses in an inner-city suburb, this subtle renovation and addition forms a lush rear courtyard holding gardens, a long swimming pool and patios. While retaining the existing interior scale of the terrace houses, a voluminous addition housing utility spaces, a kitchen, dining alcove and a lounge extends into the rear of the property. This beautifully layered addition marrying white brick, timber panelling and upholstered surfaces counters the lack of longer outlook with light derived from an encircling clerestory and the pool cleverly drawn close to the addition by way of a sunken garden. The project overall is striking for its careful reworking and retention of key heritage components while synthesizing these with an utterly contemporary extension on a site challengingly closed in on three sides.
