2022 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner
Dowie Rose House
Challengingly sited next to a railway line cycleway and located at the end of a nondescript suburban cul-de-sac, this house for a young couple beautifully marries their shared interests in architecture and the social activation of public spaces. At just 117m2, this slim, double storey home appears part switch tower, part light house. It wonderfully demonstrates how domestic architecture can rework the ordinariness of the suburbs. Patterned with colourful maritime references, festoon lighting and retractable glazed wall panels, here a domestic dwelling small in footprint is large on urban impact. Functionally simple in planning, modest in cost, yet generous in every other way, it shows a pathway for the city to a more joyous future.
