Tucked under spreading Magnolia trees at the rear of a California bungalow, this elegantly pared-back exercise pavilion offers a striking rereading of the Japanese onsen. Hosting a racing bike on fixed mounts, a simple timber bench, and a square timber spa pool—itself sunk level with the floor. With its louvred envelope, this pavilion is abundantly floodable with light, shadow, immediate outlook, or no outlook at all. Floating on an axis all of its own, the pavilion is paradoxically both a thing to be observed and something looking back. What fascinates and charms in this double beholding is the labour of its making—a precise, scrupulous marrying of hand and mind.
