Mahuika
This self-sufficient holiday house occupies a steep, narrow site running down to Waikopou Bay on Waiheke Island. In step with this topography, its long linear form culminates in a bold cantilevered living space poised between bush and sea and out over a pool and stream beyond. A glass pavilion allows sunlight in where an original house, deteriorated beyond repair, once stood. Now in a bush clearing, the new house is surrounded by a reforesting of the property and a fostering of bird life.
