Coxs Bay House
This simple yet idiosyncratic courtyard house presents a beautifully resolved response to long, tight suburban sites. With its living and bedroom spaces opening into a northern courtyard gathering light and sunshine, the house deftly borrows its longer outlook from a tree-laden reserve at its eastern end while joining the street via a small walled entry court. The journey from front to back is remarkable for its cleverly knitted together sequence of spaces, each able to open up or close down as required. A single mono-pitch roof sloping with the topography unifies the spaces. Its detachment from the walls in places by a ribbon of clerestory windows offers a wonderful floating quality. Exquisitely detailed from top to bottom, the house is a unique suburban sanctuary.
