2021 New Zealand Architecture Awards Winner

Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, Te Ao Mārama and Cenotaph Galleries

Through diverse and responsive stakeholder engagement, and respectful intervention with heritage, this collaborative team has created critical new connections and facilitated improved accessibility on multiple levels with a broadened cultural relevance to Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum. A new entry sequence from the south connects the Museum to the main car park and welcomes visitors through carved fins into Te Ao Mārama, the south atrium, greeting, hosting and orientating visitors to the building. New pathways choreograph intuitive movements, navigating between layers of heritage and extending public access through the building. Rich materiality, local timbers and sculpted forms with diverse narratives connect old with new, reinforcing cultural connections, and strongly grounding the building in its unique place in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa, and the South Pacific.
