2021 New Zealand Architecture Awards Winner
Oxford Terrace
This former Trengrove & Blunt office building designed in the late 1970s has been lovingly and meticulously restored and repurposed as an inner-city home and studio. With a lifted roof supported by new steel portals, the proportions of the original riverfront elevation have been honoured and the integrity of the original first-floor gallery space, with its exposed roof structure, reinterpreted. While a beautiful and refined new architecture of textures, elements and artwork, imbued with the personality of the owners, has been layered into the building, new insertions including windows, skylights, stairs, and a void bringing light down through the centre of the building, have been handled with clinical precision and sensitivity to the original. The architect (who once worked in the building in its former life), in collaboration with the owners, has created a beautiful inner-city home within this carefully revived and transformed icon on the Christchurch riverfront.
