Jury citation
On a budget less than the average holiday house, the architects have created a heroic building around an existing boatshed, using modest materials in a carefully considered manner. A canopied walkway deck that recalls, if not in its materials then in its majesty, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence links the straightforward and robust Whare Toi exhibition spaces, carving workshop and Whare Waka. This is a building that showcases the arts and craft of all the local iwi in a truly open and public manner with respect and dignity.
