This surprising project has awakened the planning authorities and the general public to the transformational possibilities of imaginative interventions in the urban fabric. In a tough, car-dominated environment the architects have carved out a safe haven for cyclists and pedestrians. People of all ages are now enjoying prospects once reserved for the fleeting view of motorists. The bridge and LightPath are fun as well as functional, and they, literally, send a signal that Auckland can become a people-centred city.
