The Landing - Vineyard House
This is “the humble house” – or so the property manager described it to us. The Landing itself is a thousand-acre property with vineyards and several homes, all by Cheshire Architects. This one, the newest, is 230sqm and was built to demonstrate that luxury can be achieved without a grand scale. It succeeds with breath-taking splendour. An enormous long wall of local stone leads you to the wide, iroko-framed, glass front door, and begins again past the internal vestibule, bisecting the entire house. To the right, you step down to the spacious living area, made even more spacious by iroko-framed glass wall panels, four on one side and three more at the far end, that all slide away, opening onto an expansive deck. The outlook beyond sweeps down over hills and through a valley to the sea. The roof above is a great slab, cantilevered off the rock wall, securing you to the land. Downstairs, the intimate bedroom spaces, stonework and lovely intrusions of soft light give the floor a subterranean feel. You sleep cocooned in the luxury, each room, the bath included, enjoying its own exclusive view. This house already has a grand site, but it would honour the grandest one might find anywhere.
