2019 Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards Winner
The New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute Precinct Development | Ngā Kete Tuku Iho
A new base for Aotearoa’s pre-eminent carving school has been delivered with passion and clarity. The building is sited carefully within a tourism hot spot and skilfully balances the demands of teaching and learning with the need to provide clearly defined areas for host and guests. Visitors are guided along an elevated ramp through workshops on a path inspired by the tracks left by the tōtara worm. Within its tough envelope, this is a simple yet generous gesture to connect people through looking and learning.
