2019 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner
Tāwharanui House
It’s very red, and that’s not a perversity: the colour, Pioneer Red, honours the colour of the original shed in the paddock. It looks great, and it’s done with such confidence the colour is echoed in the kitchen tilework inside. This is a weekend beach home for a bustling family, a place where everyone is encouraged to bring friends and have fun. The site is restricted, with a private road right outside the front and hillside rising behind, but to conjure a feeling of scale and also allow for moments of intimacy, RTA has created several outdoor spaces, separated the downstairs volume from the bedrooms and deck upstairs, and allowed for no internal access to anything. To get from one room to another, you go outside. There’s a generous kitchen/living area, some stylish and super-efficient bunkrooms, and a very satisfying master bedroom. You want to party? You want to relax? This is a house just perfect for both.
