2018 Nelson/Marlborough Architecture Awards Winner
Brown House
Designed as an inner-city apartment, this build is an excellent demonstration of how small, awkward sites can be enlivened and opened up into very enjoyable living places. The street front is a simple restoration of the original façade, however inside the colonial theme is abandoned for a quiet contemporary apartment style. The architects have responded to the compact, narrow envelope by designing an interior that is cleverly and creatively arranged with sliding doors to open spaces up and skylights that illuminate in interesting ways. Throughout, the building conveys a sense of being completely removed from the noisy inner-city street outside.
