Peterborough Townhouse
This Peterborough Street inner city dwelling is a handsome solution to central city residential intensification following the Christchurch Earthquakes.The interior spaces are beautifully proportioned and finely detailed, while the pitched ceilings of the upper floor bedrooms are lofty and generous. Exterior Cedar has been used both horizontally as a rain screen in a lighter finish, contrasted with vertical cladding in a stronger coloured finish. Along with Corten Steel for the planters - the palate of materials provides strength to the architectural form. The new dwelling is a two level building with two pavilions linked by a glass walkway on both levels incorporating morning and afternoon courtyards. The upper level accommodates a generous master bedroom and ensuite with balcony overlooking the beautifully landscaped northern private outdoor area. With a lovely spatial flow extending to two other bedrooms, office and family bathroom - all generously bathed with natural light and well chosen natural materials to producing a calmly ordered environment. The route from the front door on the lower level leads to a generous tiled entry with an walnut timber open stair combined with stainless steel wire supports running 8 metres from a ridged ceiling to the ground floor. The courtyard spaces on either side of the central spine punctuate progress through the house to the living, dining, kitchen zone. This spine continues into the cleverly designed outdoor garden as an axis leading to the Fernery at the rear of the 500 m2 site. The warm and inviting living space is orientated around the generous gas fire and sundrenched sitting nook to the North. The adjacent kitchen is contained to the eastern wall and filled with light from high level eastern glazing.
