Soda Inc. Offices

As a joint venture between Wintec and Hamilton City Council, Soda Inc. was conceived as a creative industries business incubator. Located alongside the Meteor Theatre in a converted soft drink bottling factory, the renovation theme draws on the history of the site, with colours of raspberry, orange, creaming soda and lime drinks, and the filtered-light transparency of the drink bottles expressed in the subsequent architectural designwork. The brief was to cost-effectively transform the former drink-batching floor to provide a working and development environment that encourages creativity and collaboration for young businesses. Some of this involved workspaces with both connectivity and a degree of separation, but also collaboration / coffee spaces, and private meeting rooms. Our design approach was based on the primary use of sculptural cabinetry, rather than that of fully-enclosed ‘ walls and rooms’. This meant we could dispose of the use of doors, wall / ceiling junctions were eliminated, and the joinery provided utility for storage and display as well as expressing the open and creative environment SODA Inc sought to engender. Creative use of materials and colour won the project a PSP Design Challenge 2011 Award in the Office Interior category.
