Small Tall Alteration
From the street, the Small Tall House presents as a tidy little cottage, its restored veranda and unassuming front door making no claims beyond their original simplicity. Open the door, though, and once through the narrow entrance you step down into a dramatically conceived, high-ceilinged, white-walled living space, fully modern and glazed right across the back to reveal a lush garden beyond. It’s a magic cave, filled with light and with couches, long flowing drapes and a generous fireplace seducing you with their promise of great comfort. Utterly secluded, utterly charming. And upstairs, the bedroom looks across a white gravel roof, through the mature trees of surrounding properties to the Museum and Domain in one direction and the towers of Shortland St and the glittering city in the other. A splendid little house that feels far larger than it really is.
