2009 Hawkes Bay/Gisborne Architecture Awards Winner
Kopua Guest House, Southern Star Abbey
This centre for guests of Cistercian Monks honours the tradition of monasteries in providing a refined and calm environment for spiritual healing and contemplation. The jury agrees with the Abbot's view that the building is about light and form, not ornamentation. A focus on enduring materials and passive solar design principles reinforces the concept of a monastery as a self-sustaining community. The design successfully manages connections between the cloister, rooms, corridors, outdoor spaces and the surrounding farmland.
