Fale Marker

Composed as an equilateral triangle extruded over the length of the upper storey, this well-proportioned bach references tents and cabin structures, ‘A’ frames, and maritime motifs. A free-flowing ground floor transitions from a series of well-disposed informal living spaces towards the road entry through to a double height space at the centre. The roof form and sleeping quarters rise above the parapet of the sand dunes capturing an idyllic surf beach outlook for the master bedroom. Partly inspired by the encapsulating envelope of a Fale or whare, the contextually strong frontage is also a signal house marking the center of Medlands Beach Aotea/ Great Barrier Island where it sits. While clearly visible enroute by Cessna to Claris Airport, the triangle draws attention and comment, and is destined to become a well-used marker along this stretch of Aotea.
