2019 Western Architecture Awards Winner
Little Savanna
This establishment, positioned on the corner of a busy intersection, is a local attention grabber. In repurposing an existing building for hospitality use, the architect has exposed the original structure, and added outdoor seating and large opening windows that balance and complement the private interior and courtyard. The use of natural materials and ‘Savanna colours’ throughout has created a visual language for the space that speaks of a contemporary New Zealand context. The acoustic treatments to walls and ceiling show the architect working to mitigate a common ‘pain point’ for diners in contemporary cafés and restaurants.
