Best in colour – 2017 Resene Colour Award winners

20 June 2017

A gallery of Resene Colour Award winners from the 2017 Local Architecture Awards.

During May and June the New Zealand Institute of Architects conducted the 2017 Local Architecture Awards programme in eight regions across New Zealand. From as far north as Kerikeri and as far south as Invercargill, juries across the country visited hundreds of buildings shortlisted in the awards. From the award-winning buildings (view by region here), the juries also conferred Resene Colour Awards on houses, schools, offices medical facilities and public buildings that were further distinguished by their architects through the use of colour.

Colour, in tandem with good architecture, can influence mood and enhance the environmental qualities of a building; it can lift spirits and create personality, highlight planes and angles or building features, qualities perhaps best summed up by the French Impressionist Pierre Bonnard, who said, "Color does not add a pleasant quality to design - it reinforces it." And, just in case you were wondering, white, for the purposes of these awards, is most certainly deemed to be a colour...
